Aurifil Artisan Challenge #5 | Using three different thread weights

Time for my first Aurifil Artisan challenge of the new year. I’ll be sad when the Artisan year comes to an end in a few months; it has been really fun being challenged to use so many lovely threads in different ways.

The challenge of using at least three different thread weights in one project was an interesting one. It’s very common for me to use two different thread weights in one project but rarely three, and even more rarely would all three be “on show” and that’s something I really want to try and achieve…just for an extra challenge!

I decided it have a go at re-creating a traditional argyle or diamond plaid design but only using straight line quilting. It was a fun experiment and actually a quilt design I would consider using in the future. I used Aurifil cotton 50wt for the intersecting diamonds at the base of the design, 80wt for the inner diamonds and then 12wt for the crossing diagonal lines. I especially love the contrast of the denser 12wt cutting through the finer 50wt and 80wt lines.
