It’s time for another “Cushion of the Month” project and now we’re at the height of summer I wanted to celebrate my favourite summer fruit with a scrappy half square triangle and flying geese design.
In my little English garden I grow a lot of strawberries. We’d eat them all year round if we could but they’re usually ready for picking in July and August, so this seemed like the perfect month for some patchwork with a strawberry-themed.
This is a great design for using up scraps and I actually think it looks better using a mix of different pink and green fabrics for the berries and leaves…the texture that you get from using a mix of prints gives them a more realistic and natural look.
Now let’s talk about pressing…with three strawberry blocks made up of half square triangles, flying geese and squares you’ll need to get that iron heated up and ready to press some seams to keep all your points accurate. Here are some tips for which direction of press to help with seam nesting when you get to the block construction steps…
- press all the flying geese seams towards the smaller corner “geese”
- press all the green and white half square triangles towards the green half
- press two pink and white half square triangles towards the white half (these will go at the top of the strawberries)
- press the other two pink and white half square triangles towards the pink half (these will go at the bottom of the strawberries)
Pressing all your half square triangle and flying geese seams in these directions will help you to nest the seams later on. Nesting seams is a great ideas, especially with half square triangle and flying geese, because it helps to keep everything lined up and accurate, and it helps to reduce the bulk which makes both patchwork construction and quilting easier.
